Porte Ponderings:

I’ve planted several native plants in my backyard. My dogwood tree has taken 10 years before producing “flowers”. A long time to grow from the stick I planted to an actual tree. Yesterday morning, I found this moth hidden in the upper branches. Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia). I had never seen one before. Unfortunately as an adult it doesn’t have a mouth, can’t eat, and only lives for 2 weeks for one purpose – to mate. I hope she was able to find a mate and will be laying eggs on my dogwood tree. They are native to this area and are one of the largest in the silkworm family with a wing span of over 7″.
